Seeing that, I wondered if that female symbol with the circle and cross below it (you know, it corresponds with the male circle with the arrow pointing sideways and up) might have been inspired by internal female organs? Not sure, but it just set off a lightbulb in my head.
If anyone knows where those symbols really came from, and/or what they're called, I'd love to know.
