My guesses for contributing factors:
1. The effect of rolling off the website's "front page"
2. The effect of things like RSS news aggregators can have a similar "rolling off" effect.
3. Sites that perform a service of "today's popular" like del.icio.us, Google News, blogdex and so many others...
While I appreciate the ease of internet news, it does tend to promote a "news for the ADD generation" mode of reading.
