I think it's horrible.
Most of these women appear to be escorted by guards, and I don't know of a hospital that has a maternity ward on the first floor, so it's unlikely they'd escape by either walking out the door or a window.
I don't have children, yet, but I can tell that I would want to be as comfortable as possible during the process. Restraining women who are in labor is cruel.

I read this less than 24 hours after giving birth, and was almost moved to tears. The whole practice sounds absolutely inhumane and barbaric. No one can make a break for freedom while in labor! Shackling a woman who's having contractions is horrific and degrading.
