How ghastly!
Women bypass sex in favour of 'instant pregnancies'
By Charlotte Edwardes and Andrew Alderson
Women are increasingly seeking inappropriate IVF treatment because they do not have the time or inclination for a sex life and want to "diarise" their busy lives.
(full article)
I've started telling patients at their annual exams that fertility does not last forever..... You would be surprised at how many young women are convinced that they will have not a problem having a child when and how they choose, even if they wait to their 40s to even start thinking about it!

I loved this quote--didn't really believe it until I read it again!
>I told one of my patients who is going through IVF that another IVF patient had just conceived naturally. She said: 'What? She's having sex? Bloody Luddite'."

...and wait, if they don't have time for *sex*, why are they so hot on having *children*?

Amanda,
Have you never observed cases where children are "Fashion Accessories" for their parents?
It used to be just us males who could try to live a life that was distant from our children. Not that I did, I had a very good example in my Father (May he rest in Peace). I have tried to follow his good example and keep our children in the center of my life.
I have always observed that a woman has the advantage of developing a lifelong bond with the child that they are carrying and nourishing within them.
Then again, while it is an advantage, it is not guaranteed. We can make free choices, we can live a self absorbed (even self-worshiping) life. If we do not have examples around us or encouragement it will be difficult. Some behaviors do need learned. Others may need un-learned.
As a personal example, I have always been better with dealing with our children in their teen years. This does NOT make my wife a "Bad Mom". It just means that she finds them difficult at this time in their lives. In our case it is a very good argument for a two parent family.
Finally, Having sexual intercourse is not being a Luddite. Burning down the IVF lab might be. That quote is a case where one incomprehension of a concept leads to another.

Even stranger but related story: What if Heather Does Have Two Mommies? Excerpt:
Look at the Catechism, No. 2376: “Techniques that entail the dissociation of husband and wife, by the intrusion of a person other than the couple, (donation of sperm or ovum, surrogate uterus) are gravely immoral. These techniques infringe the child’s right to be born of a father and mother known to him and bound to each other by marriage. They betray the spouses’ right to become a father and a mother only through each other.
